Making Wood Pens
Phase 1 - Making the Pen Blanks
Pens are started with selecting a hardwood that has a nice grain to show off. In this case, Zebrawood. |
Some pens look even better when cut on an angle. For this pen, we're cutting at 30º to show off the Zebrawood grain. |
Each part of the pen must be drilled carefully so the pen kit fits properly when finished and to help in the turning process. |
After the pen blanks are drilled, brass tubes are epoxied into them for the pen kit. The brass tubes are roughed up first, allowing the epoxy bond to be stronger |
Now, the pen blanks are ready to turn on the lathe. |
