Polishing Wood Pens : Handmade Wood Gifts, Nick's Wood Gifts

Polishing Wood Pens

Phase 3 - Polishing the Pen

A micro abrasive polish is used initially. Think of this as using a several thousand grit sand paper to take out any remaining micro scratches. This is applied with a soft cloth and then slowly removed with a separate, clean soft cloth with the lathe at high speed.
When the micro abrasive is fully removed, friction polish is used to both seal and polish the pen. Again, this is done with one soft cloth to apply the polish and a separate clean soft cloth to remove it. During this process, think of every turn of the lathe applying a very thin coat of polish. By the time it's done, there have been thousands and thousands of coats of polish applied. The friction created by the wood turning at high speed seals the wood with the polish.
After the friction polish has been applied, the pen blanks have been changed from simple cut wood to beautiful, handcrafted, carved wood.
